Simple story here. In the 1920's someone
finds the ruins of an old fort here on the tip of Parris
Island and decides it was the French colony that first got
a foothold on the New World in 1562. So they build this
monument and have a big celebration over it. In the 1990s,
they discover that fort is actually 200 yards away but they
don't bother moving the monument. Instead, they discover
it is actually the ruins of a fort by Mexicans even longer
back. I don't know, it sounds like they were trying to save
face. The finally irony is that it now sits on the PI golf
course. |

Another shot of the monument built "...to
the glory of France." Then, like now, they surrendered
it without a fight. |

Here is the Mexican dedication about 20 yards
away. I have no idea what it says. Maybe talking trash about
the French. |
|
This is an old trench dug by recruits during WWI
to practice trench warfare. They used this end of the island
for this and amphibious training. |
|
This dive bomber crashed during WWII while training
nearby. The pilots survived. |
|
We discovered it was upside down and in fairly
incredible condition considering it was in the swampy area
of Parris Island for 70 years. |
|
This is a close up of the bomb doors. I found
it incredible that there were loose items because I figured
souvenir hunters would have stripped the area by now. |

Here is the plaque. Read it if you can. |
